Chipping Campden grew wealthy on medieval wool trading, and that prosperity is reflected directly in the Grade I listed Church of St James — an exceptionally grand “wool church” for a town this size, funded by wealthy benefactors including silk merchant Sir Baptist Hicks. Grevel’s House, home to William Grevel, “the flower of the wool merchants of all England,” still stands on the High Street, dating to around 1380.

The town later became home to the Guild of Handicraft, an Arts and Crafts movement community, adding a further layer to its architectural and cultural significance.
