Two 1930s Estates Built to Different Standards
Cutteslowe was built between 1931 and 1934 as two separate estates: one for council tenants, and a private development nearer Banbury Road, built by the Urban Housing Company. The developer erected two 9-foot walls between them in 1934, physically separating the two estates for the next 25 years until they were demolished in 1959.
We mention this because it’s still practically relevant: the two estates were built by different developers to different original specifications, and that difference in room sizes, plot layout, and material quality can still show up in a survey today, even after decades of individual renovation.
Sunnymead, the other half of the ward, is home to Cutteslowe and Sunnymead Park — two separate parks united in 2006, one of them a former council tip reclaimed from the 1980s onward.
We look for details like original window proportions, roofline consistency, and party wall construction when assessing which of the two original estates a property likely belongs to, since decades of renovation have blurred some of the original distinctions.
Cutteslowe Park itself was made a public park in 1936 and remains a well-used amenity, though many of its mature horse chestnut trees were removed in 2017 following disease concerns.
