Northfield Brook is the electoral ward name; locally, the area is almost always called Greater Leys, and together with neighbouring Blackbird Leys it forms what residents simply call “the Leys.” The ward takes its name from the actual Northfield Brook — a stream formed from several smaller tributaries known as Hollow Brook, which join together and flow through Greater Leys and Blackbird Leys before running roughly parallel to Grenoble Road, the road that marks Oxford’s southern boundary here. On one side of that road sits the city; on the other, open Oxfordshire countryside.
Like neighbouring Blackbird Leys, this whole area was farmland for centuries before development. Oxford City Council began building the wider Leys estate from 1957, on land including the former Sawpit Farm, originally to house workers from the nearby Morris car factory in Cowley. Greater Leys itself represents a later phase of this same broader development story, extending the estate further south.
As of the 2021 Census, the combined population of Blackbird Leys and Greater Leys (“the Leys”) was 13,467, with Northfield Brook ward specifically home to around 6,831 residents — just over half of the combined total. The area has a notably higher proportion of social rented housing than the Oxford average (46.8% compared with 20.9% citywide), and has been identified in national deprivation statistics as among England’s more deprived wards, which has made it a focus for regeneration and community investment in recent years, including a current application for formal “neighbourhood area” status to give residents more direct input into local planning decisions.
